What is the LANTITE Numeracy component?
The numeracy component focuses on practical mathematical reasoning. You may need to interpret information, choose an operation, estimate, compare quantities, calculate with percentages or ratios, and check whether an answer is reasonable.
It is useful to think in topics first. When a question feels confusing, the hidden skill is often familiar: a percentage of a whole, a fraction of a quantity, a graph scale, a unit conversion or an average.
Skills commonly tested
- Reading numbers accurately in context.
- Choosing the correct operation before calculating.
- Estimating to catch unreasonable answers.
- Interpreting tables, charts and simple graphs.
- Working with units, money, time and classroom quantities.
Number, percentages, ratios, fractions and decimals
These topics often overlap. A ratio can become a fraction of a total. A fraction can become a percentage. A decimal may be the easiest way to compare two values. Practise moving between these forms until the conversion feels ordinary.

Data, graphs and tables
Data questions are often about reading carefully. Check labels, totals, scales and units before calculating. Do not rely only on the visual height of a bar or the largest-looking number.
Measurement and conversions
Measurement questions often test whether you can keep units consistent. Convert before calculating if the question mixes metres and kilometres, grams and kilograms, or minutes and hours.
Financial and everyday maths
Costs, discounts, budgets, quantities and rates are common everyday contexts. Write down the unit price, the quantity and what the question is asking for before multiplying or dividing.
Classroom and school-context numeracy
Some practice questions use school-like situations: reading group sizes, class survey results, excursion costs, resource packs or attendance data. The context can feel wordy, but the maths is usually one topic at a time.
How to identify weak areas
After each practice set, name the topic behind every mistake. "I got question 4 wrong" is less useful than "I missed the graph scale" or "I used the part as the whole in a percentage question".
